A Spacious Roof for Plants and People

Makinosan Michi-no-Eki Sakawa Proposal

This is a design proposal for a roadside station in Sakawa, Kochi Prefecture, situated amidst the mountains. The proposal envisions creating various spaces under a generous roof where plants and people take center stage, in collaboration with the local residents.

Sakawa is the hometown of the renowned botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino, who believed that there is no such thing as a “weed” in the world of plants. In line with Dr. Makino’s philosophy, the proposal divides the space not with walls but with plants planted in gardens, creating a single, large room where spaces gently connect with plants. The idea is to allow all residents and visitors to find their favorite places, connecting them with the future of Sakawa through this roadside station. The landscape is designed to create places where birds and people can bring seeds, supporting activities where the plants that sprout connect people and promote shared experiences.
